Not necessarily. But that reinforcing under the regular tube axle is added insurance that the axle isn’t going to collapse from the pounding received from doing wheelies (provided, of course, that the axle is of sufficient wall thickness to begin with). A lot of money has gone down the tube because a different tube couldn’t take the abuse. So why gamble? You can select a really heavy wall axle and do wheelies day and night, with nary a worry. Or you can go to a lighter wall tubing, one that is still strong (heavy enough to support your car) under normal conditions, and then reinforce the bottom side similar to this one. In this way, you’ll gain the additional strength without going to a super-heavy wall thickness.…
