CHEVY CROSSMEMBER

The majority of home-built rods seem to be Chevy-powered, and the latest trend is to install a late model running gear along with the late model powerplant. Shown here is a neat and inexpensive method of rigging a crossmember for use in supporting a Chevy-mated gearbox. The tubular crossmember shown here is a ’68 SS 396 Chevelle, and it illustrates how much width there is on each side of the trans. This is important, as it can be narrowed quite a bit for use in a small-width chassis. The ’member is also bent up and around exhaust pipes on each side, at a point very near the transmission. That leaves a lot of ’member that can be removed without disturbing mounting holes for transmission or exhaust pipe routing. There are several…
