TRAVELIN’ JAVELIN … and with batches of class, it homes in on its mark

Less than 3 years ago, Gary Crane wandered into California from Alberta, Canada, to pursue a career in professional drag racing. After 4 months and $13,000, his pursuit ship was on the line. It consists of a Ron Scrima (Exhibition Engineering) chassis of 4130 chrome moly tubing (1.5-in.-o.d. ×.049-in.-thick) with a 117.5-in. wheelbase. Scrima front axle mounts P&S spindles, Halibrand mag wheels, and Pirelli 135 SR 15 ’ es at a 55-inch tread width. The ’62 Pontiac rear housing has been narrowed 8 in. and uses Henry’s axles and Airheart disc brakes. Rear mags are also Halibrand with M&H 13.00 x 16 slicks. Heart of Gary’s one-ton stormer is a 1969 AMC experimental engine featuring 426 cubes (4.25in. bore x 3.75-in. stroke). Internal goodies include an Engle F-32 cam with.550-in.…
