La tuberculosis forma parte de la historia del arte, ya que en numerosas ocasiones esta patología ha sido la oscura protagonista de obras imperecederas que han forjado la imagen de una época. Un ejemplo lo encontramos en el personaje de Margarita Gautier, enferma de tisis, en La dama de las camelias, de Alejandro Dumas, prototipo de la delicada figura de una mujer enferma de esta dolencia. Este personaje, así como el de Violetta de la ópera La Traviata de Verdi, están inspirados en Marie Duplessis, amante de Dumas y enferma de tuberculosis. En Los Miserables de Víctor Hugo, el personaje de Fantine muere de tuberculosis debido a las condiciones en las que es obligada a prostituirse.
