CUANDO EN LA DÉCADA DE LOS CINCUENTA DEL PASADO SIGLO XX EL USO DE LA ENERGÍA NUCLEAR COMENZABA A DAR SUS PRIMEROS PASOS EN EL MUNDO CIVIL, LA IMAGINACIÓN DE LOS INGENIEROS, POLÍTICOS, ESCRITORES Y, EN DEFINITIVA, DE CASI TODO EL MUNDO, SE DESBOCÓ DE TAL MANERA, QUE SE IMAGINARON TODO TIPO DE ARTILUGIOS MOVIDOS POR UN REACTOR NUCLEAR. ALGUNOS DE ESOS LOCOS INGENIOS VIERON LA VIDA Y TUVIERON CIERTO RECORRIDO, Y OTROS NO PASARON DE LAS MESAS DE DISEÑO O DE LAS REVISTAS DE CIENCIA FICCIÓN. ¿ACASO ALGUIEN IMAGINA TENER TRANQUILAMENTE EN CASA UN FRIGORÍFICO “ETERNO” ALIMENTADO POR UNA PEQUEÑA PILA ATÓMICA? HE AQUÍ ALGUNAS DE LAS PROPUESTAS MÁS SORPRENDENTES DE UNA ÉPOCA QUE VIVIÓ ENTRE LAS ESPERANZAS Y LOS TEMORES QUE DESPERTABA LA RECIÉN NACIDA ERA ATÓMICA.

Al margen de la proliferación de todo tipo de armamento nuclear, la llegada al mundo civil de las centrales eléctricas de fisión abrió un campo tecnológico que alimentó todo tipo de sueños. A fin de cuentas, contar con una máquina alimentada por energía atómica ofrece ventajas incuestionables, entre las que destaca la autonomía. Con el uso de esta energía se puede soñar con viajes “imposibles”, o con electrodomésticos que funcionen durante décadas sin ser recargados. Claro está que, en ese tiempo, los peligros que hoy conocemos bien, se dejaban de lado ante las promesas del futuro.
