Los orígenes de Silvestre II, llamado en realidad Gerberto de Aurillac, son difusos debido a su origen humilde. Nació alrededor del año 945 en el propio Aurillac, aunque muchos historiadores sitúan su lugar de nacimiento en algún lugar de la región montañesa de Auvernia, en el centro mismo de Francia. De familia campesina, fue reclamado por su inteligencia por la orden de San Benito, los padres benedictinos. El pequeño Gerberto se formó en el monasterio de Saint-Géraud d’Aurillac, donde fue instruido en Gramática y Retórica bajo la atenta mirada del abad del monasterio, Raimundo de Lavaur. Sin embargo, esa formación le resultaba escasa, sobre todo en el arte de la Dialéctica o la Lógica, la tercera materia que, junto con las anteriormente citadas, formaba el llamado Trivium.
