Este relato comienza cuando Cristóbal Colón toca tierra por primera vez en el continente americano, en el curso de su tercer viaje al Nuevo Mundo. Si en sus dos primeras expediciones había anclado en territorios insulares –Guanahaní (actual Bahamas), La Española (República Dominicana y Haití) y Puerto Rico–, el 30 de mayo de 1498 el almirante zarpó de Sanlúcar de Barrameda y arribó a Venezuela a principios de agosto de ese año, en concreto a la desembocadura del Orinoco, el tercer río más caudaloso del mundo.
