EN EL PALACIO DE LOS MENCOS VIVE EL MARQUÉS DE LA REAL DEFENSA. SU ANTEPASADO, SEBASTIÁN DE ESLAVA, FUE UNO DE LOS ARTÍFICES DE LA VICTORIA DE CARTAGENA DE INDIAS EN 1741. EL AURA DE BLAS DE LEZO HA ENSOMBRECIDO AL DE AQUEL VIRREY QUE, DESDE SU MÁS TEMPRANA JUVENTUD, SINTIÓ LA LLAMADA DE LA AVENTURA. EL AUTOR DE ESTE ARTÍCULO HA RECONSTRUIDO LA PERIPECIA DEL HÉROE CONVERSANDO CON SU DESCENDIENTE.

Gracias a la entrevista que nos concedió Joaquín Mencos hemos conocido mejor a su antepasado Sebastián de Eslava y Lasaga, quien fuera Virrey de Nueva Granada. Mencos nos recibe en su palacio de Tafalla (Navarra). Tras una agradable visita guiada por las estancias de la casa familiar, nos invita a sentarnos en las butacas de una sala que nos transporta al siglo XVII, siempre bajo la atenta mirada del propio Virrey de Nueva Granada, que nos observa desde lo alto de su gran retrato.
