▪ Autor de una amplia y variada obra, Graham Greene (1904-1991) combina en su producción los libros de intriga con los más ambiciosamente literarios. Como escribe Vargas Llosa en el magnífico epílogo de esta edición, siendo un escritor correcto, Greene no consiguió nunca una obra maestra, y eso que, según Vargas Llosa, se quedó a las puertas en algunas de sus mejores novelas: El poder y la gloria (1940), El revés de la trama (1948) y, entre otras, El tercer hombre (1950). Y también destaca El final del affaire, que publicó en 1951 y que como otras obras suyas se enmarca dentro de su preocupación por el catolicismo como tema literario.
