HACE CIEN AÑOS SE FIRMÓ EL TRATADO DE VERSALLES, QUE PUSO FIN A LA PRIMERA GUERRA MUNDIAL. AUNQUE LOS PRINCIPALES COMBATES TUVIERON LUGAR EN LAS TRINCHERAS DE EUROPA, LA GUERRA TAMBIÉN AFECTÓ AL MUNDO COLONIAL. CENTENARES DE ALEMANES Y MILES DE CAMERUNESES SE REFUGIARON EN LA COLONIA ESPAÑOLA DE GUINEA. UNO DE LOS CABECILLAS DEL CAMERÚN, EL REY ATANGANA, QUISO AGRADECER A ALFONSO XIII SU PROTECCIÓN DURANTE LA GUERRA. EL REY AFRICANO REALIZÓ UNA EXÓTICA VISITA A MADRID A TAL EFECTO, AUNQUE ESCONDÍA OTRA MISIÓN MÁS DIFÍCIL: SOLICITAR LA MEDIACIÓN DEL REY ESPAÑOL PARA QUE CAMERÚN RETORNARA AL DOMINIO ALEMÁN.

En Madrid, a comienzos de 1918, se publicó un manifiesto bajo el título de Paz, Humanidad y Justicia.
