LOS DIVERSOS TIPOS DE ENERGÍA ALTERNATIVA A LOS COMBUSTIBLES FÓSILES VAN GANANDO TERRENO CON RAPIDEZ EN ESTAS PRIMERAS DÉCADAS DEL SIGLO XXI PARA ALIMENTAR A UNA HUMANIDAD HAMBRIENTA DE ELECTRICIDAD. Un molino de viento emplea en cierto modo la energía del sol para moverse, dado que es el sol quien, con su radiación, contribuye de forma vital al balance energético atmosférico terrestre. Ahora bien, incluso en el campo de la energía fotovoltaica, esto es, aquella que transforma de forma “directa” la luz solar en electricidad, ya se mencionaban avances a principios del siglo pasado. Se comentaba por entonces el uso del selenio para fabricar células solares (el reinado del silicio llegó bastante más tarde) y científicos de prestigio, como el físico William W. Coblentz en la década de 1920, patentaron diversos métodos para generar energía eléctrica a partir del sol utilizando diversos minerales y metales.
