A los pocos días de que la República echara a volar, se inauguraba el aeropuerto de Barajas, ese ente vivo por el que cada año transitan millones de pasajeros pendientes de los monitores (porque es sabido que por la megafonía del aeropuerto no se realizan llamadas de embarque). La República asomó la nariz el 14 de abril y Barajas, oficialmente, el 30 del mismo mes. No fue un proyecto instantáneo, claro, sino la visión cumplida de un arquitecto, Luis Gutiérrez Soto, y del ingeniero Marqués de los Álamos, quienes se aplicaron a la tarea de enterrar los aeródromos de Alcalá, Carabanchel y Getafe y de levantar la primera terminal del aeropuerto en un páramo junto al municipio de Barajas.
