Evil. Most people may believe they can recognize Evil. Evil is scary, frightening, ugly.
What if Evil isn't. What if Evil starts off as a seemingly innocent child, a child that slowly develops jealousy, hatred, and cruelty yet manages to hide that side from, and manipulate the adults around her.
What is the cause of evil? Could it be a lack of love or guidance? Perhaps evil is learned, maybe something inherently engrained into someone's soul, or in absence of a soul.
It's inconceivable to believe a child would have the presence of mind to understand manipulation, to master the tools of deception, fooling those around her, those who tried to love her, those who did love her. Much can be learned when growing up with evil, unfortunately the lessons came far too late for Elena and her beloved family.
