Look up from where you are right now and you’ll see the “forgotten facade” of your space, the ceiling. Most people reading this will be looking at a flat white ceiling, probably with a few rows of downlights that span the entire space in one single plane. A result of “efficient” builds, as much as inexperienced designers working on plan and not thinking in three dimensions. To our detriment, the ceiling is often left out of design conversations as it’s hard to visualise in standard plans and drawings.
However, as you can see from some of the projects in this issue, this underrated internal facade communicates an enormous amount about how we are to use space in our homes. It seems to be an area of new expression in contemporary…
