THE MAIN EVENT Formula 1 returns to the heart of a city for a not-quite street race on a man-made island in the St Lawrence Seaway. The Île Notre-Dame was created for the 1967 World Expo, using 15 million tons of rock extracted during construction of Montréal’s long-delayed metro system. In the mid-1970s the majority of the pavilions were demolished to make way for a rowing basin as the city hosted the Summer Olympics, while two were repurposed into the Montréal Casino which remains part of the background to this day. The interior roads were reconfigured into a racetrack as F1 machinery outgrew Canada’s two other GP venues, Mosport and Mont-Tremblant.
