In the winter of 1964, we packed up our belongings and moved from our home in Abilene, Texas, to Granny’s house in Gadsden, Ala. Melanie, the oldest, was 9; Jim, the baby, was 3; at 6, I had the “honor” of being the kid in the middle. Our lovely mother, Ruth, came with us, but not my dad. Dad, James Duke, was a captain in the U.S. Army and had been called up to serve in Korea. Carrie Lee Toney, aka “Granny,” welcomed us into her modest home on Concord Avenue with open arms. She and our grandfather had divorced long ago. She raised three children on her own during the Great Depression. Granny was a hard worker and very industrious.
