During the fall of 1964, while I was attending Pace College in New York City, I saw a job posting for CBS TV to work two days and evenings a week as a page for the presidential election coverage at CBS’s broadcast center.
I went to the open interview with low expectations and, surprising myself, got the job. I happily discovered that I was assigned as a gofer. Yes, that was my job—go for coffee, water, snacks and cigarettes for the giants of broadcast journalism. These included Walter Cronkite, Robert Trout, Frank Shakespeare, Dan Rather and many others. I was thrilled just to be in their presence.
