I will never forget holding my dad's hand and waving feverishly with the other as I watched my brother, Larry, walk away and melt into a sea of green at Chicago's O'Hare Airport. When I lost sight of him, I asked my dad, “Where's Vietnam anyway?” He didn't answer, but that didn't stop my 10-year-old mind from wondering out loud, “Do you think soldiers get scared?” “Of course they do,” Dad said. As Larry's first Christmas away from home drew near, I prayed he would return to our Merrillville, Ind., home, where everyone trimmed their windows with garland and festive lights.
