In the mountains of East Tennessee, the freezing wind coming through Big Ridge Gap signaled the coming of a harsh December. It was nigh on Christmas when my younger brother, Buddy Earl, and I were on our way down the double cow path known as our driveway. Buddy Earl pointed at the dark clouds tumbling across and down Little Pine Mountain. “Do you think we'll have snow for Christmas?” I stopped and took a long, deep lungful of air through my nose. “The wind from the north is right, and it has the smell of snow.” My brother lightly punched my shoulder. “You are funning with me.
