When I was 5, in 1953, Mom and I were shopping in Lockport, N.Y. Back then, we went from store to store down Main Street. I remember seeing Christmas decorations overhead from one side of the street to the other. The tinsel garlands lit up at night. Where the garland came to a peak in midstreet, there was a wreath with a star. A tree adorned the marquee of the Palace Theater. Merchants’ windows were embellished with Christmas colors. Some had exciting moving scenes. I anticipated riding uphill to the city, traveling the bend in the road—and then, there it was!
