Filling My Easter Basket With Joy and Delight

The family get-together meant sleeping forts, handmade dresses and a delicious dinner for the whole crew.

Easter celebrations at my grandpa and grandma Starr’s spacious, vintage home were always “eggstra” special. Mom’s side of the family consisted of eight other siblings, their spouses and all of their children, who were all of my fun-loving cousins. Grandma Starr didn’t buy eggcoloring kits from the grocery store like my mom did at home. I remember the distinct aroma of apple cider vinegar permeating the air in her kitchen. She carefully filled delicate teacups with the vinegar and then added several drops of food coloring. The cousins and I had to sit on stools to reach Grandma’s kitchen counters. My brother and I amused ourselves by dyeing the eggs vivid, cheerful colors. We loved to be creative, making distinct patterns with wax crayons before dipping the eggs into the…
