Perhaps the two biggest mistakes average golfers make when chipping is they de-loft the clubface on the backswing and then release the clubface (rotate it like in a full swing) on the follow-through. These two problems lead to inconsistent contact, poor trajectory and very little spin. The best way to get your chip shots heading straight for the target with good spin and on a higher trajectory is to hold the clubface square through impact, like Rory McIlroy is doing here. McIlroy has rotated his body through to slow down the release of his hands. This not only holds the face square longer, but it also ensures the ball comes off the clubface in the direction of the target, while ideally adding more loft and spin.…
