An historic enclosed garden opens to the public for the first time, reports Ian Hodgson

A four-acre garden in a famous Wiltshire estate is to open to the public for the first time in its 270-year history. The walled garden at Grade I-listed Bowood House & Gardens in Calne remained private to the Lansdowne family when the wider estate first opened to the public in 1975. However, to mark the 50th anniversary of Bowood’s opening, the walled garden, previously open only to private tours, will go public on April 1. The 100 acres of parkland on the estate, including the Walled Garden, were created by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. “The walled garden has always been an integral part of the estate,” said Lord Kerry, chief executive and 11th generation custodian of Bowood. “Originally producing food and cut flowers for the house, it now supplies Bowood Hotel…
