Do you chop now or wait? It depends on when your plant flowers – so get it right for a stunning display

Pruning clematis is relatively straightforward, but you do need to know what type you have before you even pick up your secateurs. Most importantly, you need to know when it flowers. This is because different clematis can bloom from late winter right through to autumn. Those that bloom in spring (called Group 1) aren’t pruned until after they’ve flowered. In the case of the popular C. montana kinds, this means pruning in May. If you do it earlier you’ll cut off all the flowers. All the rest can be pruned this month, including large-flowered kinds that bloom in May and June and smaller-flowered C. viticella kinds that bloom from late July until September.
