Jim Bridger Explores the Old West

In the early 1800s, the western part of America was so wild that people thought it couldn’t be lived in. Many dangers, such as unfriendly Indians, extreme weather, and wild animals made the West a hard place to settle. During this time, mountain men trekked west trapping beavers. They sold the furs to Easterners to make fur hats. Trapping and preparing furs took place during the summer. In the winter, both the beavers and the trappers hibernated. The mountain men camped together and shared tales about the dangers and wonders they had faced throughout the season. One of the most famous storytellers was a mountain man named Jim Bridger.
