Honey From the Hive

Think of this: When you eat honey, you’re eating bee food! Honeybees make so much honey, there is enough for people to take a share and leave plenty for the bee colony. Just how do honeybees make delicious honey? It all starts with sweet, watery nectar. Buzz! Buzz! The weather is warm, and busy worker bees are visiting thousands of flowers. They are collecting pollen and nectar to make food so all the bees in the colony can eat all year long. Nectar is especially important, and they gather all they can. They slurp it up with their straw-like tongues. The nectar goes into a worker’s “honey stomach.” When this special stomach is full, it’s time to go home. Back at the nest, the worker bees vomit up the nectar.…
