SOMERTON MAN IDENTIFIED?
On 1 December 1948, the corpse of a well-dressed man was discovered slumped against the sea wall at Somerton near Adelaide, South Australia, prompting a decades-long mystery (see FT351:30-35). He had no ID on him, all the labels were cut out of his clothes, and in his pocket there was a piece of paper with the words “Tamám Shud” – “it is finished” in Persian – on it. This in turn was traced to a copy of The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám found nearby. The book contained the phone number of Jessica Thompson, a nurse who lived in Somerton, and a series of letters believed to be a code.
