128. Las Pozas, Xilitla, Mexico North of Mexico City, the parched scrub desert of the central highlands slopes down towards the humid Gulf Coast through the rugged hills of the Sierra Gorda. Cactus and thorn bushes give way to wooded valleys, and eventually to dark green temperate forest flickering with butterflies and hummingbirds. Perched above the jungle is the small market town of Xilitla, and on its lower slopes lies Las Pozas (‘the pools’), a 20-acre valley set around a cascade of waterfalls, dense with ferns, bananas, magnolias, bromeliads and mango trees, and filled with huge and impossible structures.
