It was only in May 1935, when they were aged 18 and 16, that foster parents, checking adoption papers, discovered they were sisters, born Rose Montana Neal and Josephine Lee Neal. Their natural parents had separated 12 years earlier, and the mother put their four children in an orphanage, from which each was adopted by a different family.
