CRINOLINE INFERNO [FT452:46-50] The date of the last known crinoline fire death was given as 1933, but Fortean Times founder Bob Rickard has flagged up a likely later death, from 1938. This is the case of Phyllis Newcombe, 22, who died after bursting into flames at a dance in Chelmsford, Essex. This is usually considered a case of spontaneous human combustion (SHC) and features in almost all the major books on the subject. However, at the dance in question, Newcombe was described as wearing a “dance dress in the old crinoline style” and reports of her becoming suddenly “enveloped in flames” recall those of known crinoline fires.
