A year ago, in this column (FT440:20), I introduced readers to a cryptozoological conundrum that had been puzzling me since the 1990s and which dated back a further six decades to a news report in the periodical Modern Wonder. The report, dated 27 May 1939, claimed that some mysterious beasts had been captured by a photographer in the jungles of Malaya (now Malaysia) and had been shown to officials in Manila, capital of the Philippines, but that no-one had been able to identify them.
