THE WEBLEY-FOSBERY AUTOMATIC REVOLVER
The Webley-Fosbery is one of those interesting firearm designs that was based on what seemed to be a good idea. Developed at the time when the auto-loading pistol was a curiosity, the Webley-Fosbery was an attempt to combine advantages of an automatic pistol with those of a revolver. Invented by Col. George Fosbery, a former Indian Army officer who had won a Victoria Cross, the prototype was based on a Colt SAA revolver that had been modified so the upper portion could recoil along rails in the lower section, in the process rotating the cylinder and cocking the hammer. Theoretically, this offered the reliability of a revolver with the consistent trigger pull of a weapon that was self-cocking. Functioning of the Webley-Fosbery was quite clever.
