Records tumble in national crop yield competition

Two new maize and five soya bean yield records were set in Grain SA's Grow for Gold National Yield Competition 2022. The winners of the competition, the third to be held, were announced at an event in Muldersdrift, Gauteng, recently. In all, 84 producers in 16 categories were recognised for outstanding yields achieved with maize, soya bean and sunflower crops across South Africa. "Over the past three years, the maize yields entered into the competition improved by an average of 3,7%," said Corné Louw, senior economist at Grain SA. He added that the yields of entrants were between 160% and 180% higher than the South African average yield of 5t/ha.
