Shift to GM maize could arrest food insecurity in Kenya

Kenya lifted a moratorium on the importation and open cultivation of genetically modified (GM) crops in early October, a measure that had been in place since 2012. The National Biosafety Authority in that country will now begin the process of setting up guidelines for the importing and production of GM crop varieties. Testing of GM maize varieties in Kenya began as far back as 2010, but recommendations for commercial production were only made to the country's cabinet in 2021. The adoption of the recommendations makes Kenya the second African country, after South Africa, to fully embrace GM crops, in a move that is anticipated to open up and deepen bilateral trade in livestock feed and food between the two countries.
