Captain’s Bed

A bed, a dresser, a few shelves and a desk combine to form the perfect all-in-one furniture project

The captain’s bed originated from necessity in compact maritime quarters, where it transformed cramped cabin space into functional storage. Our version of the classic build can do the same for a teen’s bedroom overflowing with tech, sports or school gear, or a guest room serving double-duty as a craft studio, home office or other flex space. The lofted design maximizes the area between the mattress and floor, efficiently housing a dresser with roomy drawers, open cubby shelves and a retractable desk. In the Handyman studio, all hands were on deck to bring it to life—I collaborated with cabinetmaker and deputy editor Ethan O’Donnell to construct the individual components, then assembled them to form the final product.
