December 17, 1903, North Carolina, USA, Earth – The first powered, heavierthan-air manned craft achieves flight. July 20, 1969, the moon – The first earthling in 2.6 million years of evolution leaves a footprint somewhere other than his home planet. In just 66 years, the inhabitants of this pale blue dot went from being bound by gravity to using it to explore our sky. Our greatest achievements to date happened in a single generation. I don’t want to downplay the advances in automotive technology. Cars are safer and more efficient than ever. However, when I think we went from the Wright Brothers to Chuck Yeager breaking the sound barrier in just 44 years, I wonder if the car industry has been a little too concerned with focus groups and marketing…
