La idea de utilizar espías psíquicos para obtener información de inteligencia no es reciente. El espionaje británico se lo planteó a raíz de los experimentos psíquicos con el dotado francés Alexis Didier, sobre los cuales había escrito el reverendo Chauncey H. Townshend en The Zoist (1851), la publicación londinense más famosa sobre mesmerismo e hipnotismo que seguían todos los profesionales interesados en tales fenómenos y en la mente humana. Aquella fantasía se hizo realidad en EE UU más de un siglo después, durante la Guerra Fría.
