The ORIGINAL Eleuthera Beaches Book - First edition published in 2001
Only the Best Beaches
The authors have chosen to document beaches where you'll actually want stay a while, so you don't waste precious vacation time searching for the best beaches.
The beaches of Eleuthera are, simply put, FABULOUS. Much of this Bahamian island's shoreline is given to sandy beaches, however, access to these beaches can be really hard to find. Most access roads are little more than tracks cut through the bush by local farmers. Sometimes the roads are part of a housing subdivision and may (or may not) be paved, but even these can be overgrown. There are precious few "To The Beach" signs (the government did put up a few signs but many are now missing). If you venture down a promising looking road, there is no guarantee that it will take you anywhere near a beach. Clear Directions
The Elusive Beaches of Eleuthera gives you explicit directions and distances from local landmarks to accessible beaches plus information about road conditions and the type of vehicle you might need. The book also has GPS (Global Positioning System) readings for the turn to take from the Queen's Highway and where each access road ends at the beach. Each Beach Rated
The authors have personally inspected each beach and rated them in several useful categories:
- access
- privacy
- swimming
- snorkeling
- beach combing
Each beach is rated from 1 to 5 in each category with 5 being the highest rating.
Other Attractions IncludedIn addition to directions to over 50 of the best beaches, this book also includes directions to non-beach attractions such as:
- Preacher's Cave
- The Queen's Baths
- The Boiling Hole
- The Hatchet Bay Caves
- The Ocean Hole
- Sweeting's Pond
- and more
Additional Useful Information
You'll also find a useful chart documenting the mileages between settlements, a list of medical clinics with phone numbers, a list of gas stations with phones numbers and more.
The Elusive Beaches of Eleuthera by Geoff & Vicky Wells is a little handbook that these self-described 'beachologists' have compiled with sincere devotion to the art of beach-bumming. Every beach on the island is awarded scores for ease of access, privacy, swimming, snorkeling and shelling. Directions and a brief description of each of these little bits of paradise accompany the scorecards. Beg, borrow or steal one of these books when you arrive, or contact these clever people yourself. Ten Best Beaches
The authors have also included their personal picks of the ten best beaches in Eleuthera.
A Note from the Authors
When we published the first edition, over 20 years ago, several of the beaches were unnamed, so we had to give them names for the book. We are proud to say that some of those names have stuck and become semi-official. We see many people using those names in forums and other books.
Although we were the world's first "Beachologists" we now see the term used frequently.
