Some people find their true calling as young adults—bitten by an inspiring college course or an encouraging boss. Others come to their vocation preternaturally early, like Marina Adams, who says she knew exactly what she wanted to do from the very beginning. “I feel like I was born an artist,” the New Jersey–bred, New York–based painter says. “Even when I was very small, I wouldn’t leave the house without a purse that could fit paper, preferably colored, and pencils, preferably colored. They were my mandatory provisions.” Radiant hues—from marigold and fuchsia to crimson and cobalt blue—are the cornerstone of Adams’s lyrical abstract paintings.
