This issue, our Londonphile delves into the city’s rich art scene and wealth of public collections to share five of his favourite galleries

London has more than 800 galleries, making it one of the top international destinations for art lovers. The oldest is Dulwich Picture Gallery (more on this shortly) which was also the first purpose-built public art gallery in the world. Today, the Tate Modern, housed in a former power station on the south bank of the Thames, is the capital’s largest as well as the most visited, closely followed by the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square. There are plenty of other galleries with exhibitions to suit all artistic tastes and interests, spread right throughout London. Here are five of my favourites.
