As well as being the country home of Britain’s Bloomsbury Group, Lewes was one of the cradles of American Independence, as Russell Higham discovers on a short break in the East Sussex town

The last part of England to convert to Christianity back in the late 7th century, Sussex still maintains a spirit of defiant individuality. In Lewes, the county town of East Sussex, smartly kept streets lined with elegant boutiques and tea houses conceal a legacy of rebellion and pagan rituals, some of which survive to this day. The town’s 5 November bonfire festivities (lewesbonfirecelebrations.com) are the biggest and oldest (dating from 1795) in the country, as well as possibly the most raucous. It’s all in stark contrast to the rest of the year when Lewes displays what can only be described as impeccable manners.
