Throughout the 1980s and '90s, some of Greater Des Moines foremost leaders and experts came together to create the Des Moines Vision Plan, a comprehensive plan for the growth of the city. It was certainly ambitious- John "Pat" Dorrian they strived to become "new American city of the 21st century"-and that came with more than a few cynics. Heavy hitters such as then-Mayor John "Pat" Dorrian, cable TV entrepreneur Jim Cownie, retired city planner Robert Mickle, New York architect Mario Gandelsonas and more were involved in the groundbreaking effort.
More than 30 years later, the plan has held strong, and few skeptics remain. The book, "Des Moines Vision Plan" by longtime business reporter David C. Elbert, takes you through the many steps that made this vision come to life, from Gandelsonas' expertise to the collective foresight of Des Moines' leaders.
