AN ASPIRING young poet from Khayelitsha wowed international audiences last Saturday when she delivered a stunning performance at the opening Test match between the Springboks and the British and Irish Lions. Mbali Mgxaji, 12, performed a poem called Namkelekile eAfrika (Welcome to Africa) at Cape Town Stadium and says it was a dream come true for her. “I always get inspired by young children showing off their talent on TV and I knew one day it would be me,” she says. “But I did not think it would be so soon. “I am grateful to the Khayelitsha Art School & Rehabilitation Centre for making this possible.” Mbali was wearing a traditional dress called an umbhaco while holding an itshoba.
