Once, after completing a sportive looping through the Dolomites, I asked a fellow rider how he’d enjoyed his ride. ‘Fantastic,’ he said. ‘I averaged 250 watts.’ No mention of the jaw-dropping scenery, thrilling descents or great food at the feed stations. Just his power output. How were the views? ‘My stem could do with a polish.’ Sadly it seems everything has to be quantifiable these days. And it’s a similar story with travel, where it seems to be not where you go, but how far away it is. It still amazes me that ‘a tour of New Zealand’ somehow merits more kudos than ‘a ride to a village in Sicily’. The world is getting smaller but less interesting. Distance is somehow deemed better than destination. But you don’t have to travel thousands…
