STOP THE SLOP #2 – MAINSHEET SNATCH One of the most irritating sea conditions is a leftover slop with a light wind. The sails slat, boom bangs around and sheets droop and then snatch tight. All this causes more wear on sails and hardware than a strong wind. To avoid damaging the mainsheet block attachments, I often use a stretchy line to take the force of the snatching. It’s not attached permanently, so I firstly pull in the sheet to bring the boom within easy reach. The tensioned sheet also ensures the boom won’t swing inboard towards me. I tie a length of silver rope to the boom end or through the mainsheet take off, ease the sheet a little less than where I want the boom to be and make up…
