Instead, direct your attention to the heavenly backdrop behind that sets the scene: a picture of celestial bodies and almost impossibly realistic night sky. This is the ‘star map’ on Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Grande Complication Calibre 945, depicted using the grisaille enamel technique for the first time in the brand’s history. Originating in 16th-century France, grisaille enamel work is recognised by its chiaroscuro effect showing contrasted light and shadow for an image that is almost three-dimensional in appearance.
