Luminosity has always been a specialised focus for some watch maisons. Its origins began with highly radioactive material that glowed in the dark – radium. When scientists discovered the dangers of the material, radium was replaced with tritium pigments. Tritium is weakly radioactive, but the watch case itself blocks any exposure. Modern tritium phosphors have a far longer and greater luminosity and can be embedded into solid synthetics using additive manufacturing.
