Where is it: The Upper Mustang Valley lies to the north of the Annapurna range, near the border with Tibet. Access is via Jomsom, which has a small airport, and then the village of Kagbeni. When to go: April to October. The region is protected from the monsoon but in winter snow arrives from the north and 70% of the population migrates south, some as far as Kathmandu. Expect to hike up at dawn, launch early and land before the strong valley winds start. Access and permits: Visitors need a $500 10-day trekking permit. Access is limited – non-Nepalis must arrange their visit through an agency, which is possible from Pokhara.
