cq world wide: Efforts Continue to Bring Ham Radio to North Korea

Work is under way once again to bring ham radio to North Korea (the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, or DPRK), a country with no amateur radio operators and where government-sanctioned transmissions by foreigners in the country are rare. Organizers from Spain are hoping that one of the first events might be a DXpedition that will be combined with a humanitarian appeal to help the “Love North Korean Children” charity. The last attempt to operate in North Korea was in 2005, when, although a ham’s radio gear cleared customs, it was held by the Ministry of Communications for a week before he received a statement telling him he could not operate in North Korea.
