MYSTÈRE DE LUMIÈRE Sa fière proue de béton semble une allégorie de la barque des saintes Maries fendant les flots. Après deux ans d’une rénovation conduite par l’architecte Éric Grenier, l’église Saint-Dominique, inscrite à l’inventaire supplémentaire des monuments historiques, vient de renaître à la vie sacrée et à la cité. Bâtie en 1964 pour doter d’une paroisse les quartiers est de la ville, elle sera l’œuvre phare de Joseph Massota (1925-1989), brillant architecte nîmois émule de Le Corbusier et Niemeyer. Anticonformiste, partisan d’une architecture pauvre, Massota en fait un manifeste de modernité. Privée de toute structure visible, la nef abrite une saisissante liturgie lumineuse, où le divin semble frémir dans un filet de verre et de béton.
